Uncle John's Vacation

Uncle John spent his summer vacation by visiting the Great Wall in Beijing. The Great Wall is the longest wall in the world. It is like a huge dragon stretching from one mountian to another. It seems to have no beginning and no end. Uncle John had never climbed so many steps before. It took him a long time to walk from one tower to another. He was tired but excited. He enjoyed standing on the tall tower because he could see far and wide. He felt great!

After he was back from the Great Wall visit, he went to Cheung Chau Island for the Bun Festival. He watched the procession along the main streets. There were lion dances and colourful floats. There were people playing Chinese music too. People stood in the streets and watched the procession.

After the festival, Uncle John had his supper at home. It was a meal of potluck. There was a lot of food in the pot: chicken, beef and vegetables. He had a great time with his family. He had a very enjoyable summer vacation.

e-mail messager - Tenses

Hi Cindy,

How are you? I'm sorry I have not written to you for a long time. I have not written to you for a long time. I have been busy. I have visited many places in the past two months, but I like Africa the best.

I'm now in a safari park in Africa. There are different kinks of wild animals. I'm staying in a special hotel room. It's a tree house. I have never stayed in a tree house before. It's high up in the tree so that no animals can reach it. Have you ever seen a tree house before?

I have taken many photos of the wild animals. Hey, I have held a big snake ! My friend has taken a photo of me with the snake. Have you ever held a snake?

I will go to visit a friend in Beijing next month. Then I'm coming to Hong Kong. What interesting things can I do and see in Hong Kong?

Take care and have fun!

Love,
Uncle John

Dictation

Potluck is from two words: pot and luck. In the old days, people in America often cooked their meals with big pots. When people came to visit during suppertime, the family usually invited the guests to join them. They served them the food from the pot.

People were lucky if it was just the beginning of the supper. There was a lot of food in the pot. They could have chicken, beef and vegetables. When they came late and there was only a little food left in the pot, they ate what was left. That was bad luck.

The Big Lion and the Little Rabbit

Once upon a time, there lived a big lion in a jungle. Every day he hunted and killed many animals. The animals were worried that one day none of them would be left alive. They all decided to go to the lion and find a solution to this problem.

When the lion saw all the animals approaching, he was very happy as he thought that he would not have to take the trouble to hunt. He could just kill all the animals together once and for all.

One of the animals, a little rabbit, stopped him and begged that he listened to what they had to say first. He went on to explain that as the lion was king of the jungle, and all the other animals were his subjects, the lion would not be a king at all if he killed all his subjects. He would have no one left to rule over. He suggested that if the lion stayed home, one animal would surrender itself each day as food for the lion. The lion agreed to this offer on the condition that if they ever failed to send him an animal, he would go on a killing spree and finish all of them off.

From then on, each day an animal was sent to the lion and the lion was pleased.

One day it was the turn of a little rabbit to sacrifice his life to provide food for the lion. This little one did not want to be the lion’s meal. He thought of a plan that would save his life as well as the lives of all the other animals in the jungle.

The rabbit slowly made his way to the lion’s den. The lion was pacing up and down, extremely hungry. He was furious when all he saw was a little rabbit. He wanted to kill all the animals in a rage. The rabbit timidly explained that the animals had actually sent him six rabbits, but five of them were killed and devoured by another lion.

The lion roared in anger. He wanted to know who this other lion was who dared to steal his food. The rabbit stuttered that it was a very big lion. He had warned the other lion not to eat him as his king would be very angry and definitely come to fight him. The rabbit went on to say that that the other lion had called His Majesty an impostor and had challenged him to prove who was actually the king of the jungle. The lion was furious. He asked the rabbit to take him to the other lion as he wanted to kill him.
The little rabbit led the lion to a well and told him that the other lion was in there. The lion peered into the well and saw his own reflection. He thought it was the other lion. He let out a huge roar which echoed back at him. He immediately jumped into the well to attack what he thought was the other lion. The lion dashed his head against the rocks and drowned.
The jubilant little rabbit returned to other animals to spread the good news.

The Sly Fox and the Little Red Hen

A little red hen lived alone in the woods. In a rocky cave nearby lived a sly old fox.

The fox always dreamed of catching the little hen cooking her for dinner!

But the little red hen was very clever, and she was always careful to lock her door.
At last the fox thought of a way to catch her. He waited for the little red hen to leave the house.

While she was busy collecting sticks for her nest, the fox crept through the woods towards her house.

The fox carried a bag with and he sneaked into the hen's little house.
The little hen had a terrible fright when she found the fox in her house. She flew up onto a high beam.

"You can't catch me here," she said to him, "so you might as well go home."

"Are you so sure of that?" asked the fox as he began chasing after his own tail.

Faster and faster he ran, and the little red hen became very dizzy watching him.

She fell off the beam and fox quickly put her in his bag. He then started off for home.
But the fox was tired from running, so he took a nap. The hen took her scissors to cut her way out of the bag.

The clever hen filled the fox's bag with stones. Then she trotted off for home.
